Community Health :: Training of Health Service

Hands to Hearts International (HHI) is a USA based NGO, founded in 2004 working for neediest children all over the world came.  HHI began collaborations with Viswa Yuva Kendra, Angul in early 2007 and both the organizations planned together to work for the needy children in Odisha. It came into reality in July 2007 when Ms. Laura Peterson, Founder of HHI came to Odisha. HHI had a training module through which she wanted to train the people who work closely with children within the age group of 0-5 years, the most critical time of development, so that the they will get better care and love from them.

Objective of the Program

  • To strengthen the love and bonding between caregivers and children.
  • To improve caregivers' understanding of child development.
  • To teach caregivers the importance of early childhood development.
  • To empower caregivers to use their interactions to promote healthy development, regardless of resources such as books or pens and papers, or if the caregivers are literate.
  • To promote the best development possible for all children.
  • To improve child health.

Need for capacity building

It has become a mind set of most of the people that, childhood development means physical growth and good health of a baby. Everybody starts talking about the weight of the baby, whether it has been properly immunized or not, whether it gets proper nutritional food, etc. When a woman conceives everybody takes care that she should give birth to a healthy baby. All other domains of development like cognitive skill and social/emotional development are given least priority.

We plan to develop the capacity of caregivers in such a direction that they will recognize the importance of each developmental domain – physical, cognitive, language and social/emotional – to best support the overall well-being of the child, building the foundation for a lifetime of improved health and learning, and the ability to build positive relationships and be a productive member of society.

Type of Trainees and Duration of Training

We provide training to the health service providers engaged for providing services to the children i.e. ICDS workers, crèche teachers, orphan care givers etc. We provide 4 days training to the crèche teachers and orphan care givers and two days for the ICDS workers. The training curriculum designed by Hands to Hearts International, USA is used during the training. It covers physical development, massage, language development, cognitive development, hygiene, social development, importance of daily observation of infants.
